Hackett’s Cove, Nova Scotia — Nautel Limited announced this month that the company has surpassed the 10,000 unit mark in transmitter sales worldwide, and in the past 3 years has become one of the largest radio transmitter manufacturing companies in the world.
While Nautel started innovating with solid state transmitters 42 years ago the recent history of company has been marked by accelerated growth . “It is significant to note the rapid acceptance of our recently introduced transmitters,” said Peter Conlon, Nautel President and CEO. “In just a few short years, our NV Series FM transmitters, NX Series AM transmitters and VS Series low-power transmitters have been installed in over 1100 sites.”
The company attributes the success of its radio transmitter line to the strength of the Nautel engineering team, which is constantly pushing the boundaries of transmitter design, paired with uncompromising product support. “An interesting note is that we are still providing support on every transmitter ever made by Nautel, including units made several decades ago,” said Conlon. “Once a Nautel transmitter goes into service, we are committed to supporting it for its full life.”
Nautel products can be found in climates ranging from arctic to desert to jungle and have been deployed in 177 countries on all continents. The company pioneered solid state radio transmitters in 1970 and has seen many industry firsts since then including the first solid state transmitters in many power categories for both AM and FM; advanced transmission technologies such as Reliable HD Radio Transport, Asymmetrical Sidebands, HD PowerBoost; and the Nautel AUI, a portal for accessing some of the most comprehensive control and diagnostic capabilities ever found in a broadcast transmitter.
“We are thrilled to have reached this latest milestone in our company’s history, and we are looking forward to continuing to serve broadcast customers everywhere in the world,” said Conlon. “With our superb development team and unmatched customer support, our goal is to make Nautel the undisputed leader in quality, reliability and operational capabilities. We’re dedicated to living up to our motto, ‘Expect More’, in every way.”

* AWR Announcement: Expansion at KSDA Guam

A special news release from the international headquarters of Adventist World Radio in suburban Washington DC gives broad details of an expansion project at the AWR shortwave station on the island of Guam in the Western Pacific. This news release was prepared by Shelly Nolan Freesland, who is the Communication Director for the entire AWR System. This news release states:-

The Board of Directors of Adventist World Radio has approved, in concept, the expansion of AWR’s shortwave broadcasting facility, station KSDA, on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean. It is intended that this project will result in much better coverage of China which is a critical mission area for the Seventh?day Adventist Church.

The Guam station, which was established in 1987, currently broadcasts programs in 30+ languages for nearly 300 hours each week to a large portion of Asia. Just over half of these hours consist of Mandarin programming for listeners in China.

The station’s shortwave footprint also includes India; and together with China, these two countries contain close to half of the world’s total population. In addition, listeners in countries such as Vietnam, North Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and more, can all hear AWR programming in their own languages.

The technical equipment for shortwave station KSDA currently consists of six antenna towers, four curtain antennas, and five transmitters at 100 kW each. The largest tower is 330 feet tall, and each curtain antenna is about the size of two football fields.

The shortwave signals that are generated at AWR Guam can travel for thousands of miles, enabling the gospel message for these last days to freely enter many areas without hindrance. Although the current equipment enables a good reliable signal to cover many areas in Eastern Asia, yet a stronger signal is needed to adequately reach listeners in the northern areas of Eastern Asia, such as northern China, Mongolia, Siberia, and beyond.

This new project for increasing the reliable coverage area from shortwave station KSDA calls for an additional curtain antenna. Adding a fifth antenna will enable AWR to broadcast a strong signal to these northern areas during prime listening hours, as well as simultaneously transmitting additional programs in more languages.

“Over the years, our Mandarin broadcasts have generated an incredible response from listeners in China,” says AWR president Dr. Dowell Chow. ”But these listeners are primarily located in the south part of the country, where our signal is much more consistent and clear. So our goal is to provide the same quality of broadcasts to the millions of people living in the areas further to the north.”

“At the same time,” continued Dr Chow, “We are continuing to develop programs in additional languages. We are pleased to have recently found producers for AWR programming in the languages of Tibet and Bhutan. When these new programs are ready for broadcast, we will need the additional air time on this planned new antenna system.”

Additionally, Dr Chow stated, that while AWR recently placed significant resources into launching a comprehensive podcasting system – in which all of our radio programming can also be heard worldwide online – we recognize that shortwave broadcasts are still a vital part of our mission. He added that in spite of the growth in Internet usage, shortwave is still the primary method of receiving information for literally hundreds of millions of people. A full 24 percent of the world’s population does not have regular access to electricity. So at AWR, we remain very aware that our listeners in many areas throughout the world are extremely diverse.

AWR states that the installation of the new tower and antenna system should be completed by the end of 2012, which is the 25th anniversary of station KSDA Guam.

In explanation, it is stated that Adventist World Radio is the international mission radio arm of the worldwide Seventh?day Adventist denomination. Programs are broadcast in particular throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East on shortwave as well as by AM & FM radio. Additionally, all of the AWR multi?language programming is also available worldwide as podcasts, and also on?demand at awr.org.

The Radio Heritage Foundation says the local radio dial in Christchurch [New Zealand] is almost back to the situation it was before the massive earthquake of February 22 2011 which disrupted many services.
All radio station brands from the main broadcasting networks [Radioworks, The Radio Network, Radio New Zealand and Rhema Broadcasting Group] are on air with normal programs and no reported technical issues. Access to some local studios in the CBD continues to be an issue but the stations have been working around this problem for over two months now.
Community access stations Plains FM and Compass FM are basically operating their usual schedules along with most other independent stations in the city, although again, some studio facilities remain off-limits in the CBD, with Pulzar FM amongst the worst affected.
The eastern suburbs of the city have seen the return of local low power FM stations The Wave FM from Sumner and Burwood Community Radio, and Beachbreak FM at South New Brighton is close to returning to the airwaves.
Invercargill based Classic Gold now has a low power station located at New Brighton replacing the high powered emergency mobile station we initiated and which they operated as Radio New Brighton 102.1 FM for two months from outside the Central New Brighton School” says foundation chairman David Ricquish.
From this week, students at the fringe CBD based NZ Broadcasting School have also launched C96 FM using a high powered transmitter covering the city. The station is dedicated to the rebuilding of Christchurch and has a fund raising target of $NZ50,000 [$US30,000] to support local businesses and the community.
“Radio proved it was able to respond quickly to local needs after the earthquake, although it did require bringing in additional resources from out of the city in the initial weeks, including a totally new local station for the eastern suburbs” says Ricquish.
“It’s clear that if a similar event should occur again, radio resources in the city would again be stretched, probably beyond breaking point. The value of having self-sufficient local community radio stations across the metro area has been driven home by the February earthquake, and they must be accorded greater value in future planning’.
The Radio Heritage Foundation was saddened to see the demolition of the original Radio Broadcasting Company [3YA] studios and building in Christchurch in recent days, another casualty of the earthquake and damage caused to many older buildings.
The Radio Heritage Foundation is a registered non-profit organization connecting popular culture, nostalgia and radio heritage and its global website is www.radioheritage.com.
Another of its ‘Helping Rebuild Christchurch’ projects involves restoring the original 3ZB radio studio and transmitter building in New Brighton in time for its 75th anniversary in 2012.

NewsletterBroadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) Chairman Walter Isaacson released the following statement concerning coverage of recent events in the Middle East:
“As Chairman of the BBG, I have been regularly updated on developments across the Middle East by our Arabic-language broadcasters Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa. I am impressed by the results, and the commitment from the reporters, editors and managers at MBN to consistently uphold the highest journalistic standards, to compete with other outlets to get the story first, to get it accurately, and to provide the rich content the public deserves. They are playing a crucial role in reporting the developing story by providing live coverage from Cairo and other key cities, pre-empting regularly scheduled programming to cover breaking news, and incorporating video clips, photos and online comments from protesters as well as commentary from U.S. policymakers and analysts. Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa are important media players in the Middle East during these tumultuous days, contributing to international broadcasting in significant ways, utilizing all means of communications available, and with dedicated commitment to the mission.”
The Broadcasting Board of Governors is an independent federal agency, supervising all U.S. government-supported, civilian international broadcasting, whose mission is to promote freedom and democracy and to enhance understanding through multimedia communication of accurate, objective, and balanced news, information, and other programming about America and the world to audiences overseas. BBG broadcasts reach an audience of 165 million in 100 countries. BBG broadcasting organizations include the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), Radio Free Asia, and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti).

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 05:27 PM PST

(January 28, 2011 – by Ralph Kurtenbach and Harold Goerzen)

The longtime host of a popular shortwave radio listeners’ program, Clayton Howard, died on Thursday, Jan. 27, in Tahlequah, Okla. He was 92. He had served from 1941 to 1984 as an engineer with Radio Station HCJB, an international shortwave station in Quito, Ecuador.

For more than two decades he and his wife, Helen, hosted the “DX Partyline” program. (”DX” is a radio term for distance; DXers are listeners to distant radio stations.)

Clayton was born on Nov. 27, 1918, to missionary parents in Canton, China. His father, Charles Howard, an entomologist and college professor, and his mother, Anne, a biologist and teacher, served at a Christian university and conducted research for the Chinese government to develop a finer grade of silk. When Clayton was 9 years old the family returned to the U.S. where his father developed the biology department at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

At Wheaton Academy, Clayton loved learning about radio and electronics. In 1939 he graduated from Wheaton College with a physics degree followed by a year of graduate studies in physics at the University of Chicago.

“I heard HCJB on Easter Sunday of 1940 while [the station was] inaugurating a new 10-kilowatt transmitter,” Clayton once said in an interview. “I had known there was a missionary shortwave station in South America previously, but knew very little about it until 1940.”

Clayton contacted HCJB Global co-founder Reuben Larson who then recruited him to join the technical team at La Voz de Los Andes (the Voice of the Andes) in Quito. College Church in Wheaton later commissioned him as a missionary, and he arrived in Ecuador to begin serving at Radio Station HCJB in 1941.

Clayton’s marriage to Helen Marie Prestidge on Sept. 12, 1942, was broadcast live from Quito via shortwave “so the folks back home could hear it,” according to his son, Chuck Howard. The couple had met in Wheaton, and Helen went to Ecuador after she graduated. It was her father, a Baptist minister, and Rev. Evan Welsh, pastor of College Church, who together prepared the phonograph record with the marriage ceremony, leaving gaps for “I do” from the couple.

Many station employees remembered Clayton as a technician whose special knack was keeping the tape recorders, record turntables and mixing consoles going, according to Chuck, an HCJB Global missionary teacher in Quito. Clayton served primarily in audio work, but he was also involved in everything technical such as transmitters, antennas, studios, power and remote programs. He was also actively involved in the search for a new international transmitting site for the station, eventually selecting Pifo.

A career highlight for Clayton was helping a fellow engineer at the station, Clarence Moore, design and build the world’s first cubical quad antenna. Also, in an era in which Ecuador’s communication resources were marginal, Clayton actively handled remote broadcasts for the Ecuadorian government. He contributed to the growth of HCJB from a small radio facility to a major international broadcaster, reaching out with the gospel message in many major languages.

Blessed with an excellent bass voice, Clayton loved his involvement with regular live music programs in English and Spanish. He took part in concerts each year to honor the station’s host city, Quito. In the mid-1960s Clayton took over as host of “DX Partyline,” a semiweekly program for shortwave enthusiasts.

Clayton and Helen also began Andes DX International (ANDEX), a club for shortwave radio listeners, and the ANDEX magazine. The Howards corresponded with people around the world. In addition to shortwave listening tips, they shared “Tips for Real Living,” focusing on a meaningful relationship with the Creator. It was their joy to lead many to the Lord Jesus through the programs and follow-up correspondence.

After their final “DX Partyline” program aired in June 1984, Clayton received what Chuck referred to as an unusual tribute from an unlikely source, Radio Moscow, which stated, “The living legend of the Andes has retired!”

Upon retirement, the Howards spent 10 years in Florida, then moved to Go Ye Village, a Christian retirement center in Tahlequah. “When Clayton and Helen came to live at Go Ye Village,” said retired HCJB Global missionary Don Schroder, “Clayton set up closed-circuit TV to televise the Sunday chapel services, Bible studies and memorial services. These televised services went into all the homes and apartments of residents in the village.”

Clayton was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years on Jan. 3, 2010. Survivors include three children, Chuck Howard of Quito, Leland Howard of Missouri and Ruth Anne Leaf of Illinois (recently retired from missionary service in Japan), as well as 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He loved to share his enthusiasm for radio, and he enjoyed meeting with radio clubs in the U.S. “On one occasion,” Chuck remembered his father telling, “he was met at the door to the club by a lively group of young men, all sporting T-shirts with his picture on the front!”

One such teenaged fan of Clayton and Helen’s radio show was Rich McVicar who quipped, “It was one of the very few programs I would actually listen to. The rest of the time, I was constantly tuning the dial for new catches!”

Years later, when McVicar arrived as an HCJB Global missionary in Ecuador, the Howards were there, having been coaxed back to Ecuador for a short visit. “In fact, Clayton and I co-hosted my first four ‘DX Partyline’ programs,” McVicar said. “Becoming the producer of ‘DX Partyline’ was a dream come true for me, and being introduced to the famous host of my teenage listening days was a uniquely wonderful experience.”

Another young listener was John Beck. Upon Clayton’s retirement, Beck was the program’s new host. “I was scared. I had listened to Clayton and Helen since high school. But he told me not to worry and that he would help me in the transition,” Beck said. “I watched him conduct a couple of tapings, introducing me on the second to the audience and then he turned to me and said, ‘OK, now it’s your program.’ I stammered. ‘But I thought we would have a transition of at least a couple of months!’” Beck said Clayton’s reply was, “Oh no . we leave next week.”

“Clayton not only taught me over the air much of what I learned about shortwave radio as a hobby,” added Ken MacHarg, who later hosted the same radio program. “He was also the door through which I began doing programming on HCJB.”

“Before my wife and I ever went there, he asked me to adapt portions of my book, Tune in the World, for broadcast as a series,” MacHarg explained. “I recorded profiles of various international broadcasters who were featured in the book and sent them for use on the program.”

Chuck described his father as one who loved Ecuador and its people. Although he was a practical joker at times, his passion for Christ was evident. “He was a humble, rather private man who felt rather awkward in large groups, but in his quiet way, he was a very effective servant of the Lord,” Chuck said. “He didn’t preach, but he made it possible for others to preach the Word to millions of needy souls around the world.”

His life verses were, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6, KJV).

A memorial service is set for Go Ye Village Chapel at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29.

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 11:21 PM PDT

Hello friends,

Just few notes about the IOTA SWL Contest to be held the next weekend. This Contest is a worldwide event managed by RSGB from several years and the SWL Section has been picked up by the MDXC/SWL from 2006. A lot of stations will be active from several IOTAs and you can find their great number by checking the updated list of Announced Operations by NG3K at http://www.his.com/~wfeidt/Misc/iota2010.html

Not only a Contest but a good opportunity to collect new IOTAs and to try to enter in the IOTA SWL Annual Listing. The standard rules ask to submit at least 100 QSLs from different IOTAs to enter in this Listing, but there are good news. Now the SWLs participating in the Contest can submit, instead of the QSLs, the list of Contest QSO/HRDs. There are some limits (e.g. max 50 QSO/HRDs) and a not difficult procedure must be followed but this way it will be more easy to enter in the SWL Listing, the most important official Listing for SWLs, being the DXCC not available to SWLs.

You can find the above procedure, the previous results, a FAQ and the complete rules at http://www.mdxc.org/swl/
Good Contest!

Ireland’s millions of radio listeners have been told they will not have to throw their sets away after the Government vowed it would not be switching off the country’s FM signal.

Britain and parts of Europe are planning to switch off their analogue signal in favour of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), sparking fears that the same would happen here.

Standard radios can’t pick up the digital signal, which would make them, and millions of car radios, obsolete.
