———————————————–
The latest additions to this popular series hosted by the Radio Heritage Foundation at www.radioheritage.com have now been published.

The features take a nostalgic look back 65 years to the mid-1940s and the personalities, programs and station profiles of Australian Heritage AM Radio across the country before TV and FM arrived on the
scene.

Slightly quaint and qwirky for today’s reader, the first series, now approaching 50 features of individual stations gives a wonderful insight into how radio entertained and informed Australians of the age.

The new features cover the three original stations of the Victorian Broadcasting Network – 3HA Hamilton, 3SH Swan Hill and 3TR Sale & Gippsland and are all free to access at www.radioheritage.com.

Old station letterheads and photos of Managing Director David F Syme and General Manager Rupert A Fitts have been found to illustrate the items, along with original station logos and a pre-war network
advertisement.

If you have your own memories, memorabilia and more you’d like to share about any of these VBN stations, or any of the stations featured in series, the Radio Heritage Foundation wants to hear from
you.

It may be some old photos, booklets, newspaper or magazine articles or even some recordings. Memories of listening to the radio over the years are also important and wanted because they help people understand the important community role played by radio over several generations.
Coming soon….2DU Dubbo and 2GN Goulburn……………

Radio Heritage Foundation
Extends Coverage to Europe
_________________________

WELLINGTON [New Zealand]
The addition of major new European radio history content at its website [www.radioheritage.com] marks a move by the Radio Heritage Foundation to extend its coverage of radio heritage connections to
Europe.

Chairman David Ricquish says ‘the borderless nature of radio waves has always made it inevitable that our focus would one day expand beyond our initial work in the Asia and Pacific region. In fact, our
collections already have many materials relating to broadcasters based in Europe going back to the 1920’s. European broadcasters, their ideas, policies and cultures have had a major influence on
Pacific broadcasting for decades.’

The new content covers individual station features, 44 European countries, almost 100 separately researched years of local European broadcasting, over 15 digitized early radio frequency guides and some 250 audio samples and images.

The material has a special focus on local European broadcasting history centered on mediumwave [AM] and longwave stations, events and personalities covering the entire 20th century and the first decade
of the current period.

Mr Ricquish adds ‘Belgian based Herman Boel has collected together, with help from other European sources, a wonderful treasure trove of radio heritage material. Herman needed to spend more time on other projects so we are delighted to make sure his efforts and dedication are maintained and continue to be freely accessible to the community.’

There are many connections between European and Asia & Pacific radio heritage issues that can now be explored and showcased at www.radioheritage.com. These include the many European based shortwave broadcasters that are now fading from the airwaves but which have influenced several generations of audiences in the wider Pacific region. Amateur radio heritage connections with Europe are another area of immediate concern.

The Radio Heritage Foundation already has over 200 Asian and Pacific radio heritage features at www.radioheritage.com, hosts detailed radio guides such as the PAL Radio Guide series with thousands of stations covered on AM, Shortwave and FM, has researched and produced some 40 radio documentaries for Radio New Zealand International, and is the official World Radio TV Handbook country contributor for over 25 Pacific countries.
Donations from annual supporters and friends currently meet 50% of the operational overheads needed.
Regional event helps add another dimension to industry

The ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2011 takes place from 8 to 11 March in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Judging by the response by the broadcasters and the rest of the industry, the highly regarded regional event helps add the 3rd dimension to the broadcasting industry in capacity building and equipping them to enhance their services in step with rapid advances in technology and content offering.

This multi-dimensional event has again received a huge response from the entire broadcasting industry. Broadcast Australia is the Principal Sponsor for the event and the four Major Sponsors are Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), Harris, Sony and ATDI.
Conveying his company’s views on the event, Broadcast Australia’s Managing Director, International Business, Chris Jaeger, said: “This has now become a very significant event for the broadcast industry regionally and offers an excellent platform for Broadcast Australia and other industry stakeholders to meet, exchange views and build partnerships especially around the digital transition challenges being faced across the region.”

Richard Redmond, Vice President, Product Management & Strategy, Transmission Systems of Harris Corporation, a long time supporter of the event, said: “The ABU Symposium remains one of Harris’s principal opportunities to gain and share wide industry foresight, respond to and assess market expectations and introduce our own technological innovations with customers. With many years’ partnership and association with the ABU Symposium, Harris again looks forward to the interaction and opportunity that the conference, demonstrations and workshops will bring in advancing tomorrow’s broadcast services.”

Commenting on the event’s role in the industry, Chris Grey, Head of Broadcast & Content Creation Solutions, Business & Professional Products Asia Pacific of Sony Electronics Asia Pacific, said: “Sony is once again proud to be sponsoring this year’s event and particularly appropriate for Sony is the symposium’s theme of ‘Adding the 3rd dimension’. In the last year, Sony has made extensive efforts in bringing 3D to the market and we are delighted to be able to share our experiences through product showcases and technical seminars. Not forgetting that HD is the first step beyond SD, Sony will be on hand to discuss broadcasters’ needs to make the migration to HD.”
Pascal Gelugne, Managing Director, ATDI South Pacific, said: ”ATDI understands the importance of ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium in providing invaluable industry insights and latest technology updates to the Asia-Pacific broadcasting industry. We believe the open information sharing and close co-operation within broadcasting industry are the keys for success during this exciting time to ensure a smooth digital transition.”

Ms Ruxandra Obreja, Chairperson of the DRM, said: “This broadcasting industry event has matured into a reputed regional industry event. It provides a unique platform for the industry to network and learn about the latest developments in Broadcasting.”
Among the highlights, Dr Jong Hwa Lee, Executive Director, Future Media Strategy Department of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Symposium for his outstanding contribution in the field of mobile broadcasting. Demonstrations on Hybrid TV platform by Kit Digital and on 3DTV by Sony will also take place. In the radio area, the ‘video-in-radio’ technologies and services will be demonstrated by RF Mondial and Fraunfoher.

Six other major events taking place in conjunction with the Symposium are: DVB-T2 and ABU Technology Showcase and Trial (4–7 March), ITU-ABU-AIBD Workshop on Digital Terrestrial TV Coverage and Frequency Planning (7-8 March), DRM General Assembly (7-8 March), UNESCO-ABU Project on Promoting UGC and MIL (7-8 March), World DMB Forum’s Asia Committee Launch and Meeting (10 March) and the UNESCAP-ABU Workshop on EWBS for Disaster Risk Reduction (11 March).
The proceedings of the conference are being webcast live with a choice of low bit-rate video+ audio stream or audio-only stream.

Access to check the status of CBD radio studios of many Christchurch radio broadcasters is gradually taking place 17 days after the devasting earthquake hit this New Zealand city of 350,000.

Radio New Zealand, The Radio Network and Radioworks all have studios within this zone and engineers are still working through some city buildings to determine whether they are safe for temporary or permanent access and use. Considerable damage to some buildings housing the studios is likely.

NewstalkZB has been carrying its news coverage across 1017,1098 and 1503 AM and 106.5 AM [replacing Hauraki Amp'd]. Their main mast at Orohuia has reportedly sunk in the ground from liquifaction. Another Newstalk ZB frequency audible in western parts of the city is 873AM from Ashburton, 50 miles south.

Other Auckland based network programs heard on Christchurch area transmitters include Niu FM [Pacific Island languages], and those of RBG Rhema Broadcasting Group.

RDU 98.5 has returned to the air from temporary studios whilst Tahu 90.5 now refers to Christchurch as Quake City and has been heard carrying Maori language iwi network programs. Pulzar 105.7 FM which lost its studios in the September 2010 earthquake is broadcasting automated music programs.

Local community access Plains FM has studios at the Christchurch Polytech campus in the CBD and this zone will be opened up for access on Monday March 14. It continues using its transmitter to broadcast the BBC World Service from London as an emergency measure.

Radio Ferrymead 1413AM returns again for the period March 11-14 with automated programs and reduced live broadcasts on March 12-13. Volcano Radio 88.5 in Lyttelton continues amazing service to the shattered port area with music and local community and emergency announcements.

Destroyed or damaged local LPFM stations now include One-Eyed FM [Aranui], Beachbreak FM [South New Brighton] and The Wave [Sumner] whilst Burwood Community Radio near badly damaged QEII Park is reportedly silent but may be able to return on air shortly. Power supply is fragile. LPFM stations in Redwood, Bishopdale, Wigram, Kaiapoi, and Akaroa are all operating.

The Radio Heritage Foundation, in association with Classic Gold Radio Winton, is finalizing plans to bring a fully equipped mobile radio studio to broadcast directly from New Brighton in the coming days. Live and local broadcasts to the worst hit suburbs start on March 14. Donations of funds to cover operational costs are urgently needed at www.radioheritage.com.

Power Hits Radio 87.8 in St Albans and Akaroa FM [both Christchurch City] have been carrying earthquake coverage from the emergency nationwide local network anchored by Classic Gold Radio Winton, near Invercargill, in association with The Flea in Auckland and Splash FM on Waiheke Island.

The full network taking this feed is Classic Gold Radio [Winton], Classic Gold Radio [Invercargill], Radio Cromwell, Radio Mosgiel [Dunedin], Radio Twizel, Power Hits Radio [Christchurch], Akaroa FM [Christchurch], Hutt FM 106.1 [Wellington], Rag FM [Raglan], The Flea 88.2 Devonport/107 Takapuna [Auckland] and six hours daily streaming via the Mader Radio Network [USA].

Compass FM 104.9 FM in Rangiora has now started broadcasting on full power with a strong signal into the city carrying North Canterbury earthquake relief information, messages and music. Their signal reaches from Hanmer Springs in the north to Ashburton in the south.

Radio New Zealand Sound Archives are located in the off-limits Radio NZ studio building and operations are currently suspended. The audio and other heritage collections housed there are understood to have survived with relatively minor damage.

A full listing of Christchurch area AM and FM stations is online at www.radioheritage.com and is regularly being updated. It’s at the home page under the header ‘Christchurch Earthquake 2011′.

Please support fund raising for the Helping Rebuild Christchurch project, part of the Kiwi Radio Campaign, with donations by Paypal welcome at www.radioheritage.com.

Background – Since the earthquake on February 22, the death toll is expected to be over 200, most of the CBD may be demolished because even modern high rise buildings are now on unstable ground, and some 10,000 homes may be demolished and whole suburbs replaced with
parkland, forests and wetland. About 20-25% of the city population has self-evacuated. It is estimated the rebuilding will take 10-15 years.
Radio Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization connecting popular culture, nostalgia and radio heritage at www.radioheritage.com. It hosts the PAL mediumwave and shortwave Radio Guides, New Zealand Low Power FM Radio Guide and is the country editor for the Pacific region for the World Radio TV Handbook. In association with Classic Gold Radio it is bringing a mobile FM radio station into Christchurch to begin emergency welfare broadcasting on March 14.

Starting March 7th, 2011 our english transmission to South Asia from 1600 to 1700 UTC on 11550 KHz will be replaced by 9435 KHz. While we do notice the occasional problem of noise and interference in certain parts of India, the new frequncy has a stronger signal than 11550 KHz. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank listeners for monitoring the reception condition for us in India.
